The language your midlife clients have been missing.
Perimenopause doesn’t follow a single pattern. Energy, recovery, sleep and symptoms shift from day to day, week to week, and rigid planning turns that into frustration and drop-out. GRACE gives you a structure that respects variability, the stories that help her understand why her body is changing, and a way to adapt her training to match.
A systems problem, not an effort problem
Midlife women aren’t disengaging because they lack discipline, and trainers aren’t struggling because they lack skill or care. Most frameworks organise a single session; few organise movement across a week when capacity is inconsistent. GRACE Midlife Movement™ fills that gap.
A shared language
Not every client walks in speaking the language of training. GRACE gives you both the same words: five elements and a Wild Card, told as stories. Her dog walk is Accumulate. The long weekend walk is Endurance. Now she can see what she’s already doing, what needs more focus, and why. And she can tell you about her week in the same words.
Dose with recovery
Check in first. How she slept and how she feels set the session, not the schedule. Regulate and Accumulate are light enough for every day. Grit, Cardio and longer Endurance efforts are harder, so give her body time to recover before her next session with you. Adaptation happens in recovery. More isn’t always better.
Between sessions
The real change doesn’t happen while your client is in front of you. It happens in the small decisions she makes when you’re not there: the walk she takes, the breath she remembers, the no she says. GRACE gives her the language to make those choices. And when life goes sideways, she hasn’t fallen off. She’s played her Wild Card. That one distinction protects trust, removes shame from a hard week, and keeps her coming back to you. It’s how you become the coach she recommends.
Your programming, your voice
GRACE is made to be played with. Build your own programs on it, add your own stories to the ones here, and teach it in your own studio, in your own words. If a client asks where GRACE came from, you can tell her it was created by Mish Wright and given to all of us to use. All that’s asked is that you credit Mish when you share it.
Each element, from the trainer’s side
Grit
Say “progressive overload.” It lands better than “strength training,” which frightens some clients. It’s a little hard, not too much and not all the time, and it doesn’t need heavy weights. Progress it deliberately, and keep her pelvic floor in the plan. The Menopause Training Matrix™ shows you how.
Regulate
Regulation is calming the nervous system: rest and digest, the flip side of fight or flight. It’s trainable like any other capacity. Most women reach for a slow breath in a crisis but never practise it in the quiet. Start with the Long Exhale: two minutes, breathing out for longer than in. If “mindfulness” doesn’t land, find words that do, and bring her back to the present moment.
Accumulate
Most of her movement happens outside the gym: gardening, hanging out the washing, playing with the grandkids. Help her see these as movement opportunities. Ask what she loved doing as a girl, because joy is the engine and discipline is only the starter motor. Then add mobility. Moving in every direction greases the joints, and getting down to the floor and back up is fall prevention.
Cardio
Huffy puffy, then back down, then again. Hard enough that talking is difficult, then let her heart rate settle. Stairs, hills and a lifted pace all work, and so does breathing through the nose. As she gets fitter, move the bar. If you like a name for it, it’s the Norwegian 4×4: four minutes hard, three easy, four rounds. Check she’s cleared for hard effort first. The hour-long session is a myth, and training the way down matters as much as the way up.
Endurance
Physically, it’s the longer, steadier efforts: a long walk, a swim, a ride. In GRACE it’s also boundaries, the lines that protect her time and energy. One of the blessings of midlife is that people pleasing doesn’t have to be her default setting, so saying no to something that drains her is endurance training. She’s often the linchpin of her family, and none of GRACE works unless she’s on her own list. The physical efforts need recovery. Boundaries don’t need a cap.
Wild Card
Permission to rest without guilt, adjust the plan and not chase perfection. Nobody falls off GRACE. A day that went sideways is a day she played her Wild Card, and tomorrow is a new day. It protects trust and keeps her coming back to you.
Start where she is. For a client who’s new to exercise or wary of the gym, begin with Regulate and Accumulate. They build rhythm and trust, and they show her that movement can fit her life. Bring in Grit and Cardio as her capacity grows, because they protect her mobility and independence for the next third of her life. Endurance runs alongside: she says no more often, and yes to longer chances to move with friends. If your shape looks different, that’s fine. Know why, and you can explain it to her.
Support for her between sessions. No extra work for you.
Living with GRACE is where your clients live GRACE between sessions. Its weekly view shows the shape of her week, including the GRACE gaps. Often she’ll arrive heavy on Cardio or Grit and light on Regulate. When she shares her week with you, you both have something real to talk about.
It’s a one-off price with no subscription, no account and nothing collected, so it’s an easy recommendation to make. It becomes part of your connection with her, without adding admin.

Perimenopause is identified by symptoms, so her training can start there too. The digital Menopause Symptom Sorter works in real time: she tells you what she’s feeling, and it takes you straight to the resources for that symptom category. There are five. You learn as you go and lean into exactly what she needs, with no guesswork and no irrelevant content. A client who feels understood stays. Complete every module and pass the quizzes to become an official MTM Practitioner.
Consistency without rigidity
Fitness businesses embed GRACE and the Menopause Training Matrix™ into programming, staff training and member communication. Teams get a shared structure and a coherent story about why programming changes, and members get an experience that feels considered rather than reactive.
Tested, not polished
GRACE was shaped through the GRACE Advisory Panel (GAP): trainers, gym owners and industry practitioners whose job wasn’t to promote it, but to use it, question it and report back honestly. No perfect weeks, no ideal clients.
What came back was clarity. GRACE didn’t tell them what to do. It helped them understand why. Here’s what the panel reported:
- The stories made the “why” clear. For clients who loved cardio but hated strength training, or the reverse, the story behind each element helped them see why both matter.
- Chores became movement. Everyday tasks were reframed as chances to accumulate more activity.
- Regulate was the element most likely to be left off. Practised consistently, it gave the biggest payoff for sleep and stress.
- Trainers had a way to plan. Looking for the GRACE gaps in a client’s week showed what her program was missing.
- Joy came back. Revisiting the activities they loved as girls gave clients something to build on.
- Trainers felt more confident working with women coming to them in perimenopause.
